The Christian Defense Coalition was established in Washington, D.C. in 1991 by Randall Terry, along with Dr. George Grant, Jay Sekulow and the Rev. Patrick Mahoney to challenge the Church to live out their faith in the public square. Today we are an unincorporated religious association working with 10,000 activists across the country in helping bring spiritual awakening and cultural revolution to America. Rev. Mahoney serves as the Director.
America’s history shows it was Christians that helped establish, develop and build the citadels of justice, business, arts, media, mercy ministries and public policy in America. Here are some examples:
- *Christianity nurtured and played center-stage for the Arts for centuries.
- *Christians developed care and justice for the sick through hospitals and nursing.
- *It was the Church that first build orphanages, clothed the naked, fed the hungry and provided homes for the elderly.
- *The local Church served as a primary school where children learned to read and write.
- *The Puritans founded Harvard, America’s first university, to educate and train students for the ministry.
- *America’s judiciary was patterned after Biblical justice and the teachings of the Scripture.
- *The principles of representative government and separation of powers are distinctly Biblical ideas, rooted in Mosaic Law.
- *Our founding documents affirm the idea that our freedoms and rights do not come from kings or presidents but from the hand of God.
Our Spiritual forefathers, through great toil, sacrifice and courage built this nation on Biblical principles to share the gospel and reach out in love and service to all of mankind. Tragically, many of the monumental achievements gained by dedicated Christians have been lost. The reason is that generations of self-centered, apathetic and shallow Christians have withdrawn from the public square.
Here are some of the consequences of the churches’ apathy and indifference: Over 50,000,000 innocent children killed through abortion, human trafficking selling children as sex slaves, racial injustice, poverty, the courts have rejected prayer and Scripture reading from public schools, most of the public education neglects references to God and the role of Christianity in the forming of America, major universities undermine and mock the Christian faith; the healing arts have now turned to abortion, physician assisted suicide and embryonic stem cell research; the judiciary has steadily placed the heel of oppression on the neck of religious liberty; our culture is addicted to consumerism and materialism and we have worshipped the “American Dream” instead of sacrifice and justice; and we have failed to properly care for our planet and it’s resources.
The challenge before the Christian Defense Coalition is to empower the church to live out their faith within the public square. We must follow the example of our spiritual forefathers and return back to fervent prayer and worship, radical obedience and discipleship and cultural engagement. We must raise up a generation of leaders, statesmen, artists, physicians, judges and journalists with a vision to see cultural reformation and spiritual awakening sweep across America.
If America is to survive and prosper, we must see a sovereign move of God ushering in national revival and cultural reformation.
The Christian Defense Coalition was prayerfully birthed to give vision, tools and strategy to this emerging generation to see revival and reformation sweep across our nation. The future of our children is at stake. Please join with us.
